Unrequited effort seethes into the ducts of disappointment.
When ample effort and enthusiasm is sprinkled into your job or to some sweet nothings you prepare for your boss or a friend respectively but you don't get appreciated sincerely or even given the chance to present what you worked hard for, it is but normal to get really disappointed.
Those tunnels of downers may lead to laxity, indifference, and even depression. But wait, before you go down that road, think! Think really hard. Is he or she even worth it? If you are referring to but one person who can never see you, maybe you should stop seeking for that approval? Maybe you should start doing things because you love doing them and not because you want to please whoever that is.
If it is about your friend, that is something you can work out and talk about. It is your friend after all.
